Buzz of Do-Won Park’s New Act in Korea

On January 17, a new performance by Do-Won Park (박도원) on YouTube drew major attention among Korean magicians.

The video depicts a scene from a show hosted by the magic circle "Monghwan" at Seoul National University on January 10. During the performance, a magician dressed in formal wear suddenly turns into Sakura Kinomoto (木之本桜), the main character of CardCaptors, executing an incredible magic routine with cards and dancing canes. The Park's performance elicited from the audience loud cheers and applause.

We had a conversation with Park regarding the inspiration of this act.

Even with the advent of the internet, the majority of people have yet to witness magic on live. I frequently pondered: to what extent can the upcoming generation genuinely connect with the portrayal of a magician dressed in black? I reflected honestly on what the ideal "magician" looked like to me as a child. It was CardCaptors for me, a show I watched after school. Sakura Kinomoto was my initial "magician." Two decades later, I aimed to manifest that unadulterated admiration I experienced at the time.

In retrospect, Lukas (이기석) did a performance centered on a magical girl in 2016, whereas Shio-Rin (しおりん) performed one inspired by Kiki’s Delivery Service in 2006. It is possible that the magical girl motif in magic acts will persist in emerging as new variations.

The possibility is genuinely thrilling.
